3-D surge anticipated

The runaway success of James Cameron’s Avatar in the mainland market is pushing China’s film industry to add 3-D projectors at a breakneck pace, Bloomberg reported. Of China’s 2,000 digital screens, 800 are capable of showing movies in 3-D. 3-D capabilities are rapidly expanding to second- and third-tier cities, and China Film Group, the state-run company that manages most of China’s cinema industry, has plans to add 500 digital projectors in the next six months. Although China only allows about 20 foreign films into theaters each year, Avatar‘s US$193.6 million in Chinese ticket sales may be a harbinger of the country’s continued demand for 3-D offerings.
