30,000 villagers clash with police

A month-long campaign by 200 elderly people protesting pollution-causing chemical plants in Zhejiang province escalated into a riot involving 30,000 villagers after reports surfaced that the police had killed a protestor, the South China Morning Post reported. More than 155 were wounded, and 50 government vehicles destroyed. Casualty numbers were not confirmed.
