[photopress:3g_button.jpg,full,alignright]The vice president of the China Internet Association Gao Lulin has said China may delay the release of its homegrown standard for third-generation (3G) wireless telecommunications, TD-SCDMA, to early next year instead of the end of this year.
And he told an Internet conference that China will not adopt only one 3G standard. He said even if the government adopts the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard, it will also consider using another foreign 3G standard.
China is currently choosing between three 3G standards — the Europe-backed WCDMA, the Qualcomm-developed CDMA2000 and the China-developed TD-SCDMA standard.
Gao Lulin said it is not a bad thing for China to delay the issue of 3G licenses, since the related policies and industry environment are still not mature. But everyone is agreement that China wants an operational 3G mobile network in time for the 2008 summer Olympic Games in Beijing. It is the one thing that can drive it to success.
