A man wielding a cleaver attacked six women on Sunday night in a market in the southern city of Foshan before climbing a building and leaping to his death, the AP reported. No reasons were given to explain what triggered the attack, which follows five recent assaults by lone individuals in China. Previous similar attacks on schoolchildren have left 17 dead and over 50 injured. The attacker, surnamed Xie, was 20 years old; most of the previous attackers were men in their 30s and 40s. The attacks have been blamed on China’s failure to address mental health issues in its efforts to modernize: Three of the previous attackers had reported prior mental health issues and two ultimately committed suicide.
