At least seven people died in a flood in a coal mine in Heilongjiang, state media reported. Five people were still trapped underground at the Jinli Coal Mine in Jixi City, said Fang Dongchu, vice secretary-general of the Jixi municipal government. Their chance of survival is considered low. About 4,000 cubic meters of water poured into the shaft on Saturday, trapping 16 miners underground. Four were later rescued and sent to the hospital. Officials expect the mine to be clear of water by Monday evening. Work safety officials said the mine was licensed, but it was operating illegally as it had not been authorized by safety inspectors.
