7,000 coal mines to face suspension

China has ordered one-third, or about 7,000, of its coal mines to halt production by the end of this year until they meet national safety standards, state media reported. If the safety requirements are not met, the coal mines will be shut down permanently. While the mandate would put many coalminers out of work, coal supply is not expected to be affected since the mandate involves smaller coalmines.
