The Leading Information Group and its office of about 20 staff was created in 1996 by the State Council. It was eliminated in 1998 with the establishment of the Ministry of Information Industry. By edict of the State Council, the LIG and its office was revived in 1999. From 2001 former premier Zhu Rongji led the LIG, with Hu Jintao and Li Lanqing serving as deputy heads. Zhu's successor as premier,Wen iabao, is expected to be the next head, with Zeng Peiyan and Huang Ju serving as his deputies.
