The State Administration of Work Safety reported that China had 13,960 industrial and workplace accidents in 2002, which resulted in 14,924 deaths, Xinhua reported. It did not give comparative figures for 2001. Last year, Premier Zhu Rongji said that workplace accidents were a grave problem and called for effective measures to improve conditions.
China had 773,137 traffic accidents last year, which caused the deaths of 109,381 people. This compared with 754,919 acci- dents and 105,930 deaths in 2001. Railway accidents totalled 11,922 last year, causing 8,217 deaths. In addition, there were 735 shipping accidents, with 463 deaths.
