According to a report by the British NGO Futures Group Europe, most Chinese condoms are well below international standards and even ones failing domestic-standard safety checks are finding their way onto the market. China has only seven domestic condom manufacturers, which produce plain unmarked foil-wrapped goods in three quality categories. These are then repackaged by marketing companies and sold under more than 1,000 different brand names. No advertising of condoms is allowed in China.
Futures Group has won permission to hand out condoms and sex advice in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces and is working with Qingdao's Double Butterfly, a joint venture with London Rubber the makers of Durex, to establish a hotline for selling safe condoms.
