The Asian Development Bank has approved a US$147m loan to tackle acid rain in central Anhui province. The aim of the project is to reduce the pollution that causes acid rain, which is especially damaging to agriculture, forestry and water ecology in the Yangtze River valley.
The project has three specific goals: to lower sulphur dioxide emissions in the cities of Guichi, Huangshan, Tongling and Wuhu; to improve power, water supply and sewage treatment facilities in areas damaged by acid rain in the Huangshan and Jiuhua mountain regions; and to strengthen the ability of the provincial government to implement policies to reduce emissions that cause acid rain.
