US labor organization AFL-CIO asked Washington to adopt economic sanctions against China as punishment for employing abusive labor controls over its workers, keeping labor costs low and siphoning jobs from the US. The group said that Chinese workers were underpaid by as much as 86%, which allows Chinese companies to cut product prices by up to 44%. It is the first time that Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974 has been used to seek trade sanctions against another country on the basis of workers rights violations.
