AFL-CIO urges US to step up trade actions against China

AFL-CIO, America's largest labor federation, is calling on Washington to intensify its criticism of China's unfair trade advantages that result from what it views as Beijing's unfair manipulation of its exchange rate, the illegal subsidies by the country's government to businesses, and the iolation of workers rights, the AP reported. The AFL-CIO urged the Treasury Department to accurately reflect what it calls China's exchange rate manipulation in its forthcoming coming report, and leaned on the Bush Administration to aggressively pursue unfair trade complaints. US manufacturers say the yuan is now undervalued by as much as 40%, which makes Chinese goods cheaper in the US and American products more expensive in China. Treasury Secretary John Snow's stop in China this week is expected to focus on China's currency policies and its trade surplus with the US.
