Alibaba eyes Chinese cloud storage business

Alibaba Group announced the takeover of privately held cloud storage platform Kanbox, the latest sign that the e-commerce giant will diversify its offerings, The Wall Street Journal reported. Alibaba made the statement on its official website Wednesday, but didn’t disclose the value of the deal. The Kanbox deal follows Alibaba’s other acquisitions earlier this year, including its investment in Sina’s (SINA.NASDAQ) Twitter-like Weibo microblog business and mobile mapping service provider AutoNavi (AMAP.NASDAQ). Alibaba said that it hopes to eventually turn Kanbox into a service that allows mobile users to back up their data on remote servers.
