The world’s biggest internet retailer is building its base where its customers are: in and around big Chinese cities. The strategy involves leasing fulfillment centers and nurturing a chain of local suppliers in Beijing, Suzhou, Guangzhou and other urban centers.
As in the US, Amazon offers shoppers plenty of free and cut-rate shipping. It is also expanding the offerings on its Chinese website, Amazon.cn, to include electronics, food, and health and beauty items. Unconfirmed reports in the Chinese press say Amazon will soon begin selling its Kindle e-book reader in China.
Forrester Research analyst Zia Daniell Wigder said, "Amazon is making inroads in one of the fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the world, and the vast majority of e-commerce today is taking place in China’s major metropolitan areas."
Investors.com reports the Seattle-based e-tailer as saying China is now its fastest-growing overseas market and is contributing strongly to overseas growth.
