The deputy governor of Liaoning province, Liu Ketian, has been arrested after a Communist Party investigation. The Wen Wei Po newspaper quoted sources saying that Liu had allegedly condoned his relatives' involvement in illegal activities and that his wife had earlier been detained by the Party.
It is not known whether the arrest is linked to the fall of his former boss Zhang Guoguang, governor of Liaoning between 1998 and 2001, who is currently on trial. This scandal, which came to light in 1999, has led to the jailing of dozens of provincial officials as well as the execution of a former deputy mayor of Shenyang for embezzlement in 2001.
