Sixteen mainland companies formed a consortium to produce and sell an anti-impotence drug to compete with Pfizer's Viagra, the patent for which was recently invalidated by the State Intellectual Property Office. A joint venture between Shanghai Shuanglong High-tech Development and Chongqing Kang Er Wei Pharmaceuticals plans to begin producing the drug as soon as it receives permission from the State Drug Administration. Viagra currently sells for close to RMB 128 per 100mg pill while other mainland anti-impotence drugs sell for as little as RMB 17 per pill. Analysts said that they expected prices for anti-impotence drugs to drop and as competition increases and the market expands.
