Foxconn (2343.TPE) and UniMicron (3037.TPE), both Apple (AAPL.NYSE) suppliers with plants in the Chinese city of Kunshan, are under investigation following complaints of large amounts of toxic metals being pumped into nearby rivers in the region, The Wall Street Journal reported. Five environmental groups alleged that the factories are emptying polluted water into the Huangcangjing and Hanputang rivers, which feed into the Yangtze and Huangpu rivers. The groups also alleged that a community next to one of the runoff canals had an elevated incidence of cancer. Chinese environmental regulations official Ding Yudong said any violations could result in tough penalties.
