Taiwan-based AsusTek Computer, the world’s fifth-largest PC maker, believes about 15 million e-readers will be sold in the global market next year. This is far lower than tablet computer sales but they are two different markets.
The new AsusTek reader is called the Eee Note and the company plans to release 2,000 units in the local market early next month before shipping it to the rest of the world.
James Lee, general manager of BenQ’s mobile communications group, said the tablet computer, seen as a replacement for the e-reader, poses a threat to the e-reader industry.
Focus Taiwan cited market research firm Gartner as saying worldwide PC shipments are forecast to reach 409 million units next year, up 15.9% from 2010. Tablets are expected to displace around 10% of the PC units sold by 2014, Gartner said.
