Hong Kong's Asia Television said it had won the right to broadcast in neighbouring Guangdong province, although it said that negotiations were continuing on revenue-sharing issues. Currently ATV, along with the SAR's other free-to-air station Television Broadcasts, are routinely and illegally broadcast in the province. However, local cable operators insert their own advertising space and pocket the revenue.
TVB said the development showed China's greater willingness to recognise intellectual property rights. Earlier this year, AOL Time Warner and News Corporation's Star Group were allowed to establish Mandarin-language satellite stations in Guangdong.
