Australia has banned Chinese telecom firm Huawei from being a supplier of equipment for the country’s 5G broadband network, the company announced Thursday.
Huawei had attempted to soothe lawmakers by promising the Australian government total oversight of any 5G equipment it supplied, but the move proved unsuccessful. The company’s operations are also restricted in the United States, and the United Kingdom is currently investigating whether the Chinese firm poses any security risks.
Huawei’s Australian branch called the decision an “extremely disappointing result for consumers,” according to Reuters.
