Australian broadcaster in landmark China deal

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Australia’s national public broadcaster, has forged a landmark deal with Shanghai Media Group (SMG) to deliver its content online, South China Morning Post reported, citing an official at SMG. The deal, to be signed on May 4, will set up an online portal giving ABC and other Australian media companies an advantage over foreign rivals in exploring the mainland Chinese market, where the Communist Party maintains a tight grip on media content. Foreign broadcasters and TV content providers are mostly off limits to the mainland market.
