Police have detained 10 company officials at eight firms throughout China, including a Coca-Cola joint venture in Gansu province and a sewage plant in Dongguan, for faking pollution data to skirt environmental regulations, Reuters reported, citing state media. Separately, Xinhua said some parts of north China will see the worst smog so far this year from Saturday, according to the National Meteorological Center. The toxic front comes as municipal government agencies in Shanghai have just announced plans to charge polluters or emissions of volatile organic compounds, precursors to the formation of smog and other kinds of air pollution.
