Chery’s millionth car
Chery Automobile became the first Chinese automaker to pass the 1 million sales mark in August. It has taken the company over seven years to reach the milestone. Chery’s one millionth sale was an A3 four-door hatchback, which will be available for purchase later this year.
Car copycats warned
DaimlerChrysler said it would consider taking action against Shuanghuan Automobile if the Noble – which the German company says resembles its Smart Fortwo minicar – appears at the Frankfurt motor show in September. The carmaker also claims the Shuanghuan model, named CEO, closely resembles its now discontinued X5 sport utility vehicle.
SAIC in possible merger
Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (SAIC) signed a memorandum of understanding with the parent of rival Nanjing Automobile, China’s largest carmaker, to discuss a possible merger of their auto operations to compete with international rivals. The merger would bring together the designs and technology each company acquired from now defunct British carmaker MG Rover.
Car ban for a day
On September 22, more than 100 Chinese cities participated in the country’s first official urban “car-free day.” The initiative was prompted by concerns about pollution and global warming. A total of 1,000 new private cars hit the road each day in China and transportation accounts for 20% of the country’s overall energy consumption.
