US-based cable channel Discovery Communications and mainland search engine Baidu launched a Chinese-language website on Tuesday, AFP reported. According to a joint announcement, Discovery will be the exclusive content provider to the website, Discovery.baidu.com, and Baidu will manage the site. The website will focus on science, technology, space, natural history, engineering, paleontology, archaeology, history and culture. The content will be customized and translated for the Chinese market. Baidu and Discovery will share revenue from third-party ad sales. Discovery content has been available on television in China since 1998. Greg Ricca, the president and chief executive of Discovery Networks International, said the online venture with Baidu was an important step in the company’s efforts to build stronger brand awareness in China.
