Baidu opens its first overseas site in Japan

[photopress:baidu.gif, full, alignright]Baidu, China’s biggest search engine, has launched an overseas site in Japan, www.baidu.jp. The site is being tested on a trial basis, according to Baidu spokesman Xu Jiye, who said, ‘It’s just a test version at an early stage, so we don’t want to make a big fuss about it in the press.’

The site’s server is based in Japan and searches web pages in Japanese, allowing web users in China to look at certain pages which are filtered in their own country.

Such plans to develop a Japanese portal were made known in December last year when Baidu said it would make an initial investment of US$15 million.

According to Alexa.com, the Baidu site ranks No.949 in terms of traffic in Japan, with nearly 60% of its users coming from China and the rest from Japan.
