Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for an end to the fighting in South Sudan on Monday in a rare overture from Beijing to jumpstart the new state’s sputtering peace talks, which formally began on Saturday, Reuters reported. “China’s position with regard to the current situation in South Sudan is very clear,” Wang told reporters in Addis Ababa. “First, we call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and violence,” he said. Three weeks of fighting have pitted President Salva Kiir’s SPLA government forces against rebels loyal to former vice president Riek Machar. China is the largest investor in South Sudanese oil.
