Beijing is considering issuing licences for third-generation (3G) mobile telecom services as early as next month in the hope of providing an extra stimulus to China’s slowing economy.
If implemented, analysts say the earlier-than-expected start to 3G services could kickstart the bigger changes in China’s telecom market that had so far failed to materialise following a sector-wide restructuring announced in May.
This week the Ministry of Information Industry, one of the government bodies involved in regulating the telecom sector, started to solicit views from local regulators on their preferred date for issuing 3G licences. A decision is expected by the end of this month, according to a source close to the ministry.
An official at China Unicom, the country’s second-largest mobile operator, also said it had been told that licences would be issued ‘soon’.
