Beijing plans $180 billion in upgrades for China's high-speed networks

Beijing plans on spending more than US$180 billion on boosting China’s Internet speeds over the next three years, The Financial Times reported, citing a statement from the State Council. Much of the investment will be poured into developing high-speed 4G fiber optic broadband networks to improve internet speeds slower than in many developing countries. Among the reasons for those slow speeds is the state’s Internet filtering and censorship system, considered by many to be the most pervasive and sophisticated information control regime in the world.
