Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail track connected

The final portion of tracks has been laid on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, state media reported. At 1,318 kilometers in length, the line is now the world’s longest high-speed railway. Work on the US$33.3 billion rail link began in April 2008 and is due to open in 2012. Travel time between the two cities will be reduced to approximately four hours from the current 10. China’s first high-speed rail line was opened in 2008 connecting Tianjin with Beijing. Several other high-speed rail links have since been opened including the Wuhan-Guangzhou line, Zhengzhou-Xi’an, Shanghai-Nanjing and the Shanghai-Hangzhou line. In total, China’s high-sped rail network covers 7,431 kilometers of track.
