China’s National Railway Administration will spend RMB3 trillion (US$460 billion) on railroads and RMB800 billion upgrading trains over the next half-decade, Caixin reported, citing a document from the administration. Beijing plans to build 30,000 km of new track over five years, the plan says, in order to develop a national passenger network that links China’s cities with populations of more than 200,000 people by 2020. The plan includes 44 bullet train lines some 5,000 km in length meant to connect populous regions, with priority going to the economic hubs of Beijing, Tianjin and neighboring Hebei Province; the Yangtze River Delta; and the Pearl River Delta.
