Beyond beach babes in bikinis

[photopress:hotels_Miss_World.jpg,full,alignright]A new Miss World has been announced at the Beauty Crown Theatre, Sanya. That it is all a sexist nonsense goes without saying.

However, this is the 57th year of the competition and it was held in Hainan, China and continues to be the event which organizers say is ‘the world’s most-watched annual TV show, with an estimated two billion viewers.’ Because of the China connection it is probably more.

The show was held in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Yalong Bay which is part of the InterContinental Hotels Group, arguably the largest hotel company in the world.

There is a tremendous effort to try and say this not about sex and looking good in a bikini. The press releases all emphasize that most of the contestants in Miss World are students, ambitious and very bright, with many speaking several languages.

Furthermore the judges aren’t just looking for luscious legs and a pretty face but are trying to decide who among them has enough talent and pizazz, to be a role model and inspiration to others.

According to Frank Vieira General Manager for the Holiday Inn Resort at Sanya’s Yalong Bay, ‘Sanya has not yet reached the level of commercial development found in other tropical destinations making it a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy life and nature.’

The winner was, of course, the Chinese entrant, Zhang Zi Lin who is already plotting her travels round the globe as China’s first-ever Miss World.
