CCTV broadcast a programme saying that Osama bin Laden had actively sponsored separatists in Xinjiang and had run training camps for them in northern Afghanistan. It claimed that about 100 activists trained by the al-Qaeda organisation had returned to Xinjiang and had carried out terrorist attacks that had killed 162 people. The report also said that most of the activists were now in exile and had joined forces with international terrorist groups.
