A two-year-old girl from Shanxi province has fallen ill with the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the South China Morning Post reported. The girl is receiving medical treatment but officials did not state how she had become infected. This is the third case of bird flu in China since the start of the year. A woman infected with bird flu died in Beijing earlier in the month after buying live ducks at a market in a neighboring province. Another woman died in Shandong on Saturday. China has the world’s biggest poultry population and is seen as a key region in the fight against the H5N1 virus. The country has had more than 20 deaths from bird flu since the virus reappeared in Asia in 2003.
