German automaker BMW (BMW.ETR) saw China sales rise 35% to 34,166 units in August from a year earlier, outpacing gains at Daimler’s (DAI.ETR) Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen’s (VOW.ETR) Audi, Bloomberg reported. Mercedes-Benz reported a sales increase of 27% to 18,087 units while Audi’s sales increased by 23% to 42,778 units over the same period. In order to boost sales, BMW is hoping for government approval to expand its assembly plant in northeast China for it to be able to increase its annual production capacity to 400,000 units.
