An explosion in the tourist city of Guilin in Guangxi autonomous region killed a man and injured 18 others, reported Xinhua. The report gave no motive for the bombing but it did say that none of those hurt were foreigners. Guilin is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.
A British tourist was found killed on October 2 near the Badaling section of the Great Wall, about 40km north of Beijing.
Westin opens in Shanghai a new luxury hotel has opened in Shanghai, the 301-room Westin. The 26-storey hotel claims to be the first international hotel to open in the Bund district. It forms part of the Bund Center complex of hotel, office tower and apartments. The Westin Residences is a luxury apartment building containing 143 apartments and penthouse units. Miguel Ko, President Asia Pacific, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, said that the building would be Shanghai's landmark of the future.
Starwood, which operates the St. Regis, Westin and Sheraton brands, now has 13 hotels on the mainland. In the next five years, Ko said it would have established a maximum of 35 hotels in addition to possibly opening at least two of its boutique-style W Hotels.
