Bombardier gets $326m order

[photopress:bombardiertrain.jpg,full,alignright]Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles, which is Bombardier Transportation and its joint venture partners in China, has announced an order 51 MOVIA metro trains — 306 cars — from Shanghai Shensong Line Mass Transit.

The contract is worth about $326 million. Deliveries of the trains should begin in the second quarter of 2008 with completion in 2009. The trains will operate on Shanghai’s Metro Line 9.

This is China’s largest metro system and it is a major move forward for Bombadier and its joint ventures in China. The new metro cars will be assembled in Changchun while the propulsion equipment will be manufactured in Changzhou.

Bombardier metro cars are in service with operators in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. In Shanghai, Bombardier has participated in the supply of 16 metro trains (96 cars) for Line 1 and 37 trains (222 cars) for Line 2 of the city’s metro system. In June 2006.

Bombardier delivered the 1,000th metro car it has built in China to customers in Guangzhou Province.

Bombardier has several business relationships with the Chinese railway industry.

Bombardier Sifang Power (Qingdao) Transportation, manufactures intercity passenger coaches for the Chinese Ministry of Railways.
Bombardier — CPC Propulsion Systems makes engines for rail vehicles.

Bombardier currently employs 2,400 people in China. Its global headquarters is in Berlin, Germany although in China it works through joint ventures.
