A survey shows the internet surfing is much, much more popular than reading books. A survey which covered 400 Shanghai professionals showed only 14% of them were serious book readers while 60% surf the internet.92% of the white-collar workers agreed that reading books is vital to improving their knowledge.44% said they were not accustomed to reading books.35% said they had no idea what to read because of the absence of authoritative recommendations in the country.57% of white collars said they had little time for reading books because of their heavy work schedule.
Shanghai Daily reported that Wu Zhaolou, a professor at Fudan University, said that while people can read classics on the web, "traditional reading can spur in-depth thoughts and online reading turns out to be superficial."
