Boss fired in Beijiang river spill

Shaoguan zinc smelter director Zhang Weijian has been dismissed after more than 1,000 tonnes of cadmium waste spilled into the Beijiang, or North River, in Guangdong province on December 15, the South China Morning Post reported. The smelter, the nation's third largest, has been closed since December 21 and 14 other smelters in the city have suspended operations for inspections. Meanwhile, state media reported the density of cadmium has been steadily dropping.
