Central government regulations forbid the convergence of television and telecoms networks outside Shanghai, but in Guangdong province China Broadband has received permission from local authorities to offer interactive internet products over the cable television network in the city of Shekou.
The hybrid fibre coaxial cables used by China Broadband are cheaper to install and cheaper to run than the broadband ASDL lines being laid by China Telecom.
In Shekou, China Broadband is in partnership with China Merchants group, and it has similar tie-ups elsewhere in the country.
