Bridges may delay shipping

The number of bridges across the Yangtze could triple by 2020, according to state media. There are currently 39 bridges spanning the river, but that figure could rise to 124 if all planned projects are completed. Shipping coming to and from the nation’s interior could be held up as a result. Exports from central and western regions may be affected as some larger ocean-going vessels could be prevented from calling at inland cities. In all, 759 million tonnes of cargo was shipped along the Yangtze last year.
