In 2008, more than 220,000 international students from 189 countries studied in 592 universities and other higher education institutes. Chinese government scholarships for international students increased to 14,000.
British students in China
There are more than 2,000 British students studying in China today. These overseas students have been a major target of China.
There is always the question of how foreign students can learn the language and culture of China before arriving to study. To help in this China has opening Confucius Institutes to promote Chinese culture around the world.
Daily Telegraph UK reported a summer course in Cardiff University’s Confucius Institute allowed teachers and students from 12 primary and secondary schools to taste some of the more traditional elements of Chinese culture. Painting Chinese blue and white porcelain, calligraphy, painting the face masks of Beijing opera, learning kung-fu — all of these cultural areas were explored and explained throughout the week.
The Confucius Institutes of Edinburgh, London and within the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust also offered similar courses. Plainly China is very keen on getting more British and international students.
