Shanghai staged China's first bullfights using bulls specially imported from Mexico and matadors flown in from Spain. Although they were taunted and stabbed with spears, the bulls were not killed during the fight, reports said, although their ultimate fate was not revealed. The event was intended by organizers to promote Shanghai as a cosmopolitan city, but was condemned by some as "cruel entertainment". One commentator in the China Daily said bull fighting has been "widely condemned by civilized society", adding that an event designed to promote the city's image was "more likely to end up bringing shame".
