During the recent G8 summit in Evian, France, President George W Bush congratulated President Hu
Jintao on China's transparent handling of the Sars crisis and invited him to visit
Washington later this year or early next year.
Bush also raised the question of Chinese controls on exports of military technology, the US having recently imposed sanctions on Nonnco, one of China's largest trading companies, in response to recent alleged
technology sales to Iran. When Ho replied that China had a comprehensive system of
export controls, Bush indicated that the system needed to be more effective.
