BYD, the company that makes electric cars which is backed by US billionaire Warren Buffett, has been fined $434,600 and made to close several buildings on illegally used land in Shaanxi province. BYD started construction on the land in December 2009 and has built roads and seven buildings there, including production plants and a dormitory.
A BYD spokeswoman had no immediate comment.
BYD signed a contract in July 2009 with the Xian new high-tech district to build a car plant with an annual capacity of 200,000 units and also expand an engine manufacturing plant in the district.
Reuters reports BYD is still making innovative vehicles and has just launched the M6 minivan, with prices ranging from US$20,900 to US$36,000.
