Candy producers recall jellies

Reported deaths of young children resulting from choking on small-sized jelly candies have prompted four major Taiwan-based candy producers to recall some 50 tons of jelly candies and suspend their production, state media reported. The latest death, that of a 19-month old girl who choked on jellies made by Shanghai Hwa Yuan Foods Co Ltd under the label of a Taiwan-based firm has led to calls for production standards that include supervision by medical experts. Standards set by the Ministry of Health, the Standardization Administration of China and the National Light Industry Association only set requirements for ingredients, color, and microbes.
