Sales of domestically-made passenger cars reached 573,400 units in the period from January to July 2002, 40 per cent higher year-on-year, according to a report by the China National Automotive Industry Consulting and Development Corp. Shanghai Volkswagen achieved the highest sales volume, with 25.7 per cent of the domestic market for sedans, while the highest growth rate was achieved by Shanghai GM, which saw sales rise by 153 per cent year-on-year to 58,017 units.
Imports of motor vehicles also rose over the first seven months of the year, reaching 67,419. The total 44 was per cent higher than in the same period of 2001.
