Caterpillar (CAT.NYSE) has announced that it will build a production plant near Shanghai to produce small hydraulic excavators, Reuters reported. Construction in Wujiang, Jiangsu will begin later this year and production should start in 2012. Caterpillar currently makes the small excavators – for which China is the largest market – in plants in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province and in Sagami, Japan, and intends to produce other equipment in those plants when the Wujiang facility opens. "We want Caterpillar customers to be more successful working with us than they can be working with anyone else, and this new operation in Wujiang is the latest step in our long-term strategy for helping our customers win in China," said Jiming Zhu, a Caterpillar vice president overseeing the company’s operations in China.
