CCTV apologizes for Beijing blaze

China Central Television has apologized for a fire that gutted a soon-to-be-completed hotel next to CCTV’s Beijing headquarters, the Wall Street Journal reported. The state-run broadcaster said an unauthorized fireworks display set off by a CCTV employee, in defiance of police warnings, had started the blaze. One firefighter died while attempting to fight the blaze on Monday night, and seven other people were injured. CCTV’s insurance liability remains unclear.
