US media giant AOL Time Warner announced at the beginning of April that its Mandarin-language China Entertainment Television Broadcast (CETV) channel had been awarded a licence to broadcast to threestar or higher rated hotels, foreign compounds and other select areas in China. An official of AOL subsidiary Turner Broadcasting System said that distribution of CETV from China's central satellite platform via Sino Satellite would start straight away.
The announcement coincided with reports that the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television was considering suspending similar broadcasting rights awarded to Sun Media channel because the shareholder structure of Sun Media had changed substantially since it had applied for approval. However the chairman of Sun Media, Bruno Wu Zheng, said that the issue was being resolved.
