Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian believes President Hu Jintao did not manage to ?score points? on his trip to the United States, and that China's rise poses a long-term economic and military threat to the island, the Wall Street Journal reported. Chen warned against forging excessively close economic ties and said Taiwan should continue to purchase weapons from the US. "When Taiwan's economy becomes overly dependent on or tilts excessively toward China, I think the government has a responsibility to issue an early warning," he said. "Investing in China is part of the global plan of Taiwanese companies. The government cannot stop it." Chen expressed optimism about mainland tourists holidaying in Taiwan in the near future.
